Though COVID-19 has caused huge disruption to our lives, our professions, and our learning, it is important to remember that we are resilient, strong and good at what we do.

We know that we can adapt and work differently, move quickly and innovate. Let’s take this chance to reset and move forward with what we know works, leave behind what doesn’t, and introduce new ways of working, together.

This Autumn, A New Direction launches Reset – our programme of support for the education & cultural sectors in response to the pandemic.

The schools strand of Reset includes a Recovery Curriculum focus to support you in using the creative arts to address the impact of the pandemic on your students’ lives and learning. Based on the work of Barry Carpenter, Professor of Mental Health at Oxford Brookes, we will focus on each of the five levers from the proposed curriculum: relationships, community, transparent curriculum, metacognition and space.

Recovery curriculum resource

In our new resource, you will find five activities – each with a different creative focus that centres on a theme from the suggested Recovery Curriculum. Some activities can be done in one lesson, but others are a sequence of activities that will require more time.

The activities have been designed to be suitable for KS2 and KS3, however we have included some tips for adapting the activities for younger and older students, along with ideas for how to make activities more student-led, and how to include more guidance for those who need it.

Each activity has been co-created with an artist and includes an introduction outlining the principles behind it, which should also support you in adapting the tasks to remain in keeping with the core focuses of the lever.

Reset CPD sessions

To support educators in adapting the resource activities to their settings, we are running a series of free CPD sessions with the artists who developed the activities. The online sessions will:

  • Offer guidance on putting the Recovery Curriculum principles into practice

  • Enable you to discuss how to adapt the activities to suit your Key Stage and cohort, make them more guided, or more student-led with the artist and other educators

  • Explore the ways the arts can support students’ wellbeing and readjustment to school life

  • Provide an opportunity to network and share advice with colleagues
