#LifeHacks Graphic Design Competition

See what our young designers came up with for the #LifeHacks campaign

23 October 2017

It’s back! Create Jobs are teaming up with NME and Salford University to bring you the second instalment of #LifeHacks

#LifeHacks is a one-day event to help you kick-start your career in the creative industries. Inspirational expert speakers from the worlds of media, design, fashion, film and music will share their advice through workshops and networking sessions, followed by an exclusive gig, and free food and drink. Last year the line-up included: Jamal Edwards, Google’s Creative Lab, Aardman Animations, Microsoft, Disturbing London, Voodoo Rays and a secret gig by Tinie Tempah! More info about last year’s event can be found here.

In anticipation of this year’s event, Create Jobs have run another Graphic Design Competition with NME to find a talented young artist to create the branding for the #LifeHacks campaign. The competition was open to illustrators, graphic designers and animators, with 10 talented young creatives shortlisted for the brief. The winner will get their artwork used as part of the assets for the year-long #Lifehacks campaign, including posters, videos, in magazine adverts and social media promotion, and will also receive a cash prize.

The shortlisted group got together on 05 October for a masterclass with the Create Jobs and NME team where they met each other for the first time, along with NME’s Creative Director, Simon Freeborough. During the masterclass, the young creatives were given the chance to talk about their individual styles and influences, as well as show off some of their best work. Simon talked about the history of NME, the range of iconic branding they’ve had over the years and why design is so important to them. This was then followed by a Q&A and top tips session with artist and illustrator, Maya Wild. The masterclass concluded with Simon setting the brief, and the young creatives were given until the 11 October to submit their campaign ideas.

Everyone then met up again on 19 October for the final masterclass and were given the opportunity to pitch their designs and campaign ideas to the NME and Create Jobs team. The quality of the submissions were sublime, check some of them out below and keep a look out for the winner announcement…
