Talking Planning

An ambitious three-year regeneration programme in Brent, Ealing and Hammersmith & Fulham

Talking Planning is an ambitious three-year creative programme in Brent, Ealing and Hammersmith & Fulham, that will work with local young people to demystify, engage and influence the planning process of London’s largest regeneration project. Talking Planning will bring together young people, urban planners, artists, architects and academics to explore and influence the planning process on a project at real scale.

Working closely with Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation, one of the UK’s largest regeneration projects, the project will support local young people to test and challenge areas of placemaking policy by recognizing them as the real experts on the places where they live, as well as creating opportunities for them to take an active role in influencing and implementing change in their own neighborhoods.

The project will be delivered across the boroughs most impacted by the OPDC regeneration scheme: Brent, Ealing, and Hammersmith & Fulham.

The programme will:

  • Develop innovative and effective participation tools which go beyond policy consultation
  • Recognize young people as active partners in urban governance at a moment in the development process where they can meaningfully affect change
  • Provide the mechanism and resources for meaningful and sustained engagement for young people via a new strategic programme linked to real projects and an embedded Youth Review Group
  • Create a model of good practice in engaging young people in the processes of regeneration, resulting in a methodology that can be replicated across regeneration programmes elsewhere and in the future.

The project also collaborated with Brent Borough of Culture 2020 and academic partners to create a Charter for Young People and Developers, which provides a blueprint for bringing these two groups together to collaboratively develop and influence future policy.
