About CREATE Programmers
The CREATE Programmers are a group of inspirational young people from across the Olympic host boroughs, Greenwich, Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, working alongside industry professionals to develop the skills and confidence required to plan, manage and produce creative events specifically for young people.
CREATE Programmers is Headstart's Event Production programme, and is supported by Artist and Event Manager Edna Pletchetero.
Summer 2011
This summer the CREATE Programmers were commissioned by Continental Drifts to programme local and emerging urban music at Lovebox on Friday 15 July, and by Shoreditch Festival to contribute workshops and performances on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 July. Both contributions were set under and contributed to the wider Create Festival umbrella.
What they Achieved:
Over eight weeks (May – July 2011), the CREATE Programmers worked weekly with music specialist Edna Pletchetero and community minded April Brown, to produce two major events as part of Lovebox music festival in Victoria Park and the Shoreditch Festival.

"As young people, the CREATE Programmes aim to produce events that meet the needs of other young people, and to bring the new generation together through events that focus on their own interests.
Being a part of the CREATE Programmers has been great. I decided to join because I have a real interest in the defferent stages and processes involved in event production, everything that leads up to a final event. I like to feel that sense of achievement when the final goal has been reached, and the realisation that the preparation, work and effort put into the event has paid off. We meet and plan and get involved in all aspects of the process.
I think there aren't enough opportunities for young people in this field. It's hard to find work because competition is really high and unemployment is up. Cutbacks in the public sector and higher taxes have made it much harder for young people to go to university, so there is no alternative but to find different types of experiences.'
