About

The Cultural Olympiad is a key element of the London 2012 Olympic and  Paralympic Games. But how can young people make sense of ‘culture’ in their  own lives. This project was an enquiry into culture: how it is defined, why it is important, and how it connects one set of individuals to others, both in the UK and around the world.

Teachers and students were invited to ‘co-author’ these definitions as well as use a variety of creative tools to find ‘clues’ that link their culture to that of the world of  the London 2012 Games.

The results led to all kinds of ‘sleuthing’ activities in 9 schools across London, facilitated by a team of movement specialists, filmmakers, spoken word artists, theatre makers, writers and visual artists.

Brent Schools participated in this programme with generous support from Wembley Stadium.

The schools:

Barking and Dagenham
Gascoigne Primary School
– made two films, one a detective story about the Olympics, and the other an animated exploration of Culture.

Brent
Malorees Junior School
– made a film about the history of both the Olympics and the Wembley Arena.

Camden
115 Behavioural Unit
– recorded two spoken-word tracks about their culture as young Londoners.
