About

The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games promises the physical  transformation of East London, new job opportunities and a better quality of life,  with young people at the centre of its vision.

With a landscape of redevelopment, how can young people in London make  sense of this change? How can they relate to the changes happening on their  doorsteps and in Greater London, and what skills can we arm young people with to become active and informed citizens?

Through working closely with the schools in the initial planning stages, individual projects were devised to connect their own local built environment with the Olympic developments and ideals. Each project then came together in a final exhibition to celebrate the journey, inviting parents and local communities to view outcomes and witness the inspiration that the London 2012 Games has injected into their wonderful designs.

Brent Schools participated in this programme with generous support from Wembley Stadium.

The schools:

Barnet
Copthall School
– ‘envirolympians’ redesigned their external teaching huts into eco buildings and teaching spaces inspired by green design, sustainability and the Olympic Ideals.

Brent
Copland Community School
– created welcome signs and way-finding for new Olympic visitors in their high street, as one of the main routes to Wembley Stadium. Through close liaison with Brent Council these have recently become artworks on local hoardings around the Stadium.

Hackney
Hackney Free and Parochial CE Secondary School Specialist Sports College –
students expanded upon their BTEC Art and Design project by designing and modelling 2012 artworks inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic Values for the playground, green space and atriums in their school.

Tower Hamlets
Harpley Inclusion and Support Centre
– worked on a live brief as part of their school’s current Building Schoolsfor the Future re-development, designing the green space and decorative fencing around their centre.
