Headstart is a year-long leadership programme that helps 15-25 year olds learn about, and shape the culture of their city.

Through Headstart, young people develop skills to make them better able to comment on their world, document it and organise things that go on in it.

Headstart is about professional development with learning taking place in the real world.

It gives young people a headstart in the creative industries, but the broad set of skills developed will be helpful to anyone who wants to use their creativity and imagination to take control of their future.

Headstarters work on real briefs and commissions for real clients and the programme is facilitated by industry professionals. They meet inspirational people, masters of their craft and visit amazing cultural spaces and place.

The 2011/12 programme

The focus of Headstart 2011-12 is to create a pop-up space for young Londoners (a cultural venue) in July 2012 that is programmed, marketed and designed by Headstarters.

Everyone in the programme will learn about how cultural venues in London work, how they bring people together and the communities they support.

The backdrop for this pop-up venue will be the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.  Headstarters will have to think critically about the opportunities presented by the London 2012 Olympics and what the games are doing for young Londoners.
