We celebrate
SHINE Week 2009 with a selection of activities and events happening in schools we work with across London - highlighting the talents in all young Londoners! We work with just under 200 London schools, and many have a host of activities and events happening during SHINE which takes place 6-10 July.

Film showing of 'Arts Beyond the Classroom' at Tate Modern
A New Direction hosts a special SHINE Week showing of
'Arts Beyond the Classroom' at Tate Modern on Thursday 9 July. The film is the culmination of a piece of work involving 2 of the London Schools of Creativity, Jubilee and Lauriston Primary Schools who have developed a project over the last 2 terms involving parents and their children building relationships with cultural organisations across the city.

The ‘Story of Stratford’ (Westfield project) at Newham Art Exhibition
A New Direction will be profiling ‘
The Story of Stratford’ project at the exhibition, alongside Discover who will profile their project ‘
Building the Future’. The ‘Story of Stratford’ is a two-year artist commission project managed by A New Direction in partnership with Westfield, as part of the Westfield Stratford City development’s broader public art programme. The project documents the progress of the Stratford City development, from a building site in 2009 to an operational retail centre upon its opening in 2011.

IPC Schools Design Programme

Students from St Michael & All Angels Academy in Southwark will be working at IPC Media’s offices all week as part in the
IPC Schools Design Programme. The students will be working with editors from leading IPC magazines, and during this time will be visited by local Councillors interested in seeing them in action.

BBC Blast visits east London for the first time
A New Direction in collaboration with the BBC brings Blast to east London for the first time between Thursday 9 – 12 July. Blast is the BBC's youth creativity service. From first-timers to emerging artists, Blast is a powerful and free resource which inspires and supports creative journeys for 13 - 19 year olds. If it's creative, Blast has got it! For four days, Blast will provide hundreds of young people in Newham the opportunity to develop new skills, showcase their work and get the lowdown from the UK's leading industry professionals - taking part in free workshops, including: slam poetry and spoken word, news reporting and photography, catwalk choreography, live music performance and creative gaming.

Pupils from Earlham Primary will SHINE in the Chinese Gallery of London’s Victoria and Albert Museum during SHINE Week, performing a site specific dance performance using the gallery as inspiration. The performance has been organised as part of SHINE Week, and fits with the school’s Creative Partnerships’ Change School project, aimed at encouraging direct contact and interaction to enable pupils to engage with public art and performance in a meaningful way. This is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to have an unforgettable experience within one of London’s iconic cultural venues.

The
Poetry Society is facilitating a workshop at Walthamstow Academy for
young people to create a poem or rap which they can enter into the
Slambassadors Uk 2009 competition on the theme of 'Identity'. The prize
is a 2 day workshop with Benjamin Zephaniah and Joelle Taylor
culminating in a performance at the Royal Festival Hall. Finalists from
this year’s Slambassadors competition (students in year 9 and 10 at
Walthamstow Academy) will perform for the new group of hopeful slam
poets, as well as show their
BBC Blast videos promoting Slam. Students from across years 7-12 will also be taking
part in final rehearsals for a production of High School Musical,
which takes place on 14, 15 and 16 July at Walthamstow Academy.

Sheringham Juniors are suspending all class timetables during SHINE Week. Every class will be investigating elements of the arts in different ways. The school has a fortnight of activities planned, starting in Shine Week and finishing with a school based exhibition of drawings, paintings and music on Friday 17 July.
Year 3 are looking at beach scenes and will be visiting Chalkwell beach to sketch, take photos and collect material to work with. They will also work with a musician in school to compose their own music.
Year 4 will visit the British museum to view their Gardens and Cosmos exhibition and use drawings made there back in class. They are also taking part in a music workshop at the LSO S
